The Ten Essentials are a very important part of all scouting not just camping but also hiking, backpacking, orienteering and even first aid.
Pocket knife: Pocket knives are very important when doing any outdoor activities you can cut rope bandages branches and even whittle items you might need such as a tent stake. When picking out a knife make sure it is of good quality you don't want it breaking during a camping trip or worse the blade could snap endangering those around you.
First aid kid: Having basic first-aid items on hand will allow you to treat minor injuries such as a scratch or scrape from a fall and to provide initial care for more serious emergencies.
Extra clothes: weather can change very quickly on a hike or camping trip so you need to be prepared for the worst. Always bring synthetic clothing and rain gear.
Rain gear: you always want to be prepared so dont bring a poncho because it won't be enough in heavy rain and it adds no heat, always bring a rain jacket with some sort of insulation like a down vest or a fleece if you are expecting bad weather.
Water storage: always bring at least two different water containers, bring a bottle in case your CamelBack pops and bring a CamelBack incase you break or drop your water bottle.
Flashlight or headlamp: always bring at least one light source with extra batteries but two is always better than one.
Food and snacks: if you are stuck somewhere on a hike or camping trip something to eat will be extremely helpful or if you get hungry on the trail. Make sure to bring something with a high energy content like a bar or trail mix.
Fire starter: always have three forms of fire starters, have waterproof matches, a lighter and a flint and steel, this way, just like the water storage, If one fails you have a backup.
Sun protection: sun protection is very important because sunburn can be very uncomfortable on a long camping trip. Always bring a hat and sunscreen on any outdoor excursion.
Map and compass: if you plan on navigating obviously a map and compass will be needed but even if you are not it is always safer to have someone with a map and navigation skills in case the JPS dies.
