Fire is always a great resource when camping. Fire can be used in many ways such as cooking, making s'mores, heating you up and being a meeting place for the camp. Although fire can be a huge help it can also be dangerous so this article is focused on teaching you how to build but also stay safe when around a fire.
First, we will discuss the two main ways to build a fire:
The log cabin method:
The log cabin method starts with placing down your tinder this will be your easily burning material such as pine needles or paper you then stack kindling around it in a log cabin shape and ignite. Once it starts burning well then you can add your bigger logs.
The teepee method
The teepee method begins with placing down your Tinder as usual stacking your kindling around it in a teepee shape since he and fire always move up words this method usually yields better results although it is more difficult to set up.
Now let's discuss some ways to keep safe.
Always make sure to keep things that are on fire in the fire pit. This includes burning sticks and logs if you would like to keep something, don't put it in the fire because you will not be getting it out.
Don't leave a fire unattended as this could lead to a Forest fire spreading out of control. This happens because a spark or ember jumps out onto a pile of leaves. In summer fire can spread fast so make sure you have a water bucket for putting out the fire (sand or dirt also works).
Never build a fire outside of a designated fire pit as this could also lead to a larger fire spreading. It is especially easy during the summer for fires to start accidentally.
Always have an adult around you when handling or building a fire.
